Canon PowerShot S3 IS Review/Stats

When it comes to knowing your camera this website "Steves-Digicams.com" is awesome. It not only tells you what you want to know, it goes beyond and tells you things you didn't even know you wanted to know. It also has lots of pictures for illustration and getting to know a/your camera better.

In my case the Canon PowerShot S3 IS. I really like this review!

Yeah, i know this is a lil late but my Flickr site is http://www.flickr.com/photos/7245809@N03/, only one picture on there (so far) is Photoshopped. The rest are just effects my camera makes. The one that is Photoshopped is called "Eyes". And im working on posting a before and after soon. I was unable to really do it during the break due to computer problems over the break :-S.

My Three Alternative Intentions

Obviously in this picture, the intention was to include as much scenery as possible. The focus is extremely grainy and the scenery is very unclear.




I decided to base the focus on my husband and I by cropping the image around us. I wanted to clear up the grain by using:

1. I'm feeling lucky
2. Auto Contrast
3. Auto Color
4. Chose Effects and sharpened the image.
5. In the Effects tab I chose Glow. I adjusted the Intensity to 25% and the Radius to 25%.

I wanted to have a little fun by selecting Focal B+W in the Effects tab. I moved to focal point to our faces and I sharpened it to about 25%.










Even though the previous picture was satisfactory, I preferred the black and white version.

Cliffhanger

This is a photo of me in red rock canyon. I wanted this photo to look like I was climbing a rock face....the trees in the back didn't help much so I made a new layer and extended the skyline. I also rotated the image and clone stamped some of the bushes.

Just kidding! Ok, here are my photos that I edited....

what I did was using the measure tool, and the rotate arbitrary tool, then I cropped the photo to get rid of my brother's hand, then used the patch tool to get rid of the corner of my hand in the upper right corner of the crop. To finish, I used the red eye tool, and cleared up her eyes.

Here, just for fun, is that same picture after I messed a bit more with PhotoshopCS2... an addition to the above steps, I used a combination of an alpha channel, a selection, Gaussian blur, and the Levels control, to darken the room and highlight our faces. I then used the color substitution tool to make the background black and white, then lowered to opacity of the layer to let a little color show through... I then took a photo of a rose and put it in the background so that it is a little transparent. Finally I inserted some text and added a drop shadow. Hee hee, Photoshop is fun!

List of steps I did to make this picture better

1. Cropping the picture, I didn't want to at first but
   I ended up doing so

2. Then I took the sponge tool and went over the
   trees to brighten them, instead of making them blurry
   and their trunks stick out from the snow

3. then I took the dodge tool and made it a bit brighter in
   white areas and to have it like more daylight
   and some of the snow caped ares

Edited and Enhanced Photograph

This photograph was taken on the way from Valdez to Fairbanks. I used Photoshop Elements 5.0 to edit my picture. I cropped the picture, removed the disturbing antenna and adjusted sharpness and shadows. Now the picture looks much better.

Boy this makes a difference and now you do not have to look at the junk to your left. My eye kind of naturally went to what is leaning on the side of the garage. I used Photoshop Elements 2 to edit this picture.

Ali underexposed and enhanced

I used Photoshop Elements 5.0 for my adjustments. First I cropped the picture. Under Enhance I used the Adjust brightness levels and made a small adjustment. Hue saturation was +9, +7, +3 so they were minimal adjustments. I increased midtones under Color cast because in the sunshine Ali's rust colors show up quite golden and that was not highlighted at all in the picture. It is a little pale but I saved it as a small file and posted it for all to enjoy

Assignment week of 3-21

Please view my assignment on my blog sight at http://aletag.blogspot.com. Under Assignment week of 3-21 I describe the photos and what I did. The first two photos are the original and the second group of two photos are the enhanced. I had a rush of chickadees last weekend and they kept me and my cat entertained for hours.

My Edited and Enhanced Photograph

I was a bit disappointed with Picasa regarding this particular subject. I took a very underexposed picture, shot at the Tanana Middle School gym and I enhanced the photo with the limited tools Picasa had to offer.

1. I applied the 'I'm Feeling Lucky' feature.
2. I applied the 'Auto Contrast' feature.
3. I enhanced the photo with 'Auto Color.'
4. I increased the fill light in the Tuning tab to about 25%.
5. I applied neutral color with the 'Neutral Color Picker' located on the Tuning tab.
6. I eliminated most of the grain with the 'Glow' feature located on the Effects tab. The Intensity of the glow is about 65% and the Radius is 25%.

Here is the result. The clarity is unsatisfactory and there are apparent spots that I couldn't get rid of. I am seriously considering purchasing Photoshop Elements.

DC Resource - I'm not even going to try to sum up this one. Lets just say thats it very indepth and that if you don't know much about cameras its easy to understand.
Megapixel.net - The main thing the review had to say is that its stylish and fairly easy to use.
Steve's DigiCams - This review gave all sorts of improvements over G1 and specs for the camera as well as pictures of the camera. But it didn't give any negatives about the camera like weight,etc..

How to...
Camera is a Canon Poweshot G2.
Color Balance - Press the WB button next to the display, Press the <> on the omnibutton then press Set to select. Exposure Compensation - Press WB button next to back display 4 times, Press < > on omnibutton to expand or contract the range, Press Set. Exposure Meter Mode - Turn mode dial to P, TV, AV or M. Press Menu, Select Lighting Meter then Menu. Macro Focusing - Press the button w/ the flower icon. Flash Mode - Press button w/ lightning bolt icon to choose flash/auto-flash/no flash.
In any mode but video press menu to adjust the following: ISO - select ISO Speed, then choose speed, press menu. File Size and Compression - select resolution or compression, choose which setting from their respective menues, press menu.
